Inspiring STEM at Stamford American with NASA’s Mission Discovery Program

Over five days, the brightest young minds from across the region gathered at Stamford American to work with an astronaut, renowned scientists, and NASA Leaders in the first ever Mission Discovery Program held in Singapore.

In line with inspiring our students to create their own unique futures, 262 students aged 14-18 from 7 countries gathered in Stamford American to be exposed to the highest level of NASA Leadership Training and Scientific Research. Over 40 Stamford American International School students took part in Mission Discovery, in which they engaged their inquiry, critical thinking, perspective taking, and problem-solving skills.

Over the course of a week, students proposed ideas for scientific experiments and presented them to various NASA Personnel. Out of 31 groups, Team Covalent emerged triumphant with their project ‘’Effect of Microgravity on Urease Activity’’ being selected to be launched into space and carried out by Astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

Jonathan Liu, a Grade 12 Stamford American student was part of the winning team. He said: “Mission Discovery has been one of the most fulfilling and exciting weeks for me. Being able to work with students from around Asia and get advice from experts at the top of their field was an eye-opener. Our team of ten started off as complete strangers but I am confident that over the five days, we had developed friendships and connections that will last. The competition was very demanding, and I have learned more than I could’ve imagined from Mission Discovery.”

Dominic Anthony “Tony” Antonelli, a NASA Astronaut veteran of two space flights, said “It was great of Stamford to host us, this whole week is always super exciting for me, I think getting kids excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is really important for humanity’s future.”

Sarah Murray, Assistant chief of EVA, Robotics and Crew Systems said “There are very few people in the world who have this opportunity to have spent the week with Scientists, NASA personnel, and astronauts. It is a special week for us all, the students have inspired me with their enthusiasm.”

Stamford American creates a collaborative environment that promotes openness to diverse ideas and perspectives. Our students are encouraged to lead and be innovative in a community that embraces integrity, courage, compassion, and ingenuity.
