Charleston, South Carolina – The Lowcountry Rice Culture Project (LCRCP) – a Charleston-based clearing house and partnership builder for activities that explore, reveal, and reclaim the shared cultural inheritance of the Southeastern Lowcountry rice industry as a basis for promoting community development and advancing the cause of human dignity – was pleased to nominate Rick Baker, Mariela Romero, Ronald and Wanda Thomas to receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

As an official certifying organization for AmeriCorps and the Office of the President to nominate candidates for the award, the LCRCP sought to commend these candidates for their lifelong commitment aimed at building a strong nation through volunteer service. Each of the honorees has long worked to empower their respective communities through volunteerism, and after a thorough review process, the Office of the President decided to recognize all of these candidates for their decades of volunteerism.

During ceremony with City of Charleston, Mayor John Tecklenburg on July 28, the Executive Director of the LCRCP, Dr. Kim Cliett Long, presented the awards to Mr. Baker, Ms. Romero and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas. “The Lowcountry Rice Culture Project is honored to have played a part in recommending such highly esteemed individuals for the president’s recognition of their volunteer service,” she said. “Their collective commitment and sincerity to public service is highly commendable and lives on in the lives of all they have served.
